Abstract In this research, an experimental study was performed to investigate the torsional behavior of RC beams with opening repaired by steel plates. Three main variables were considered, the influence of steel plates configuration, opening width and steel plate thickness. The experimental investigation includes testing of seven RC beams. The specimens were tested under pure torsion. The experimental results showed that the existence of the opening in beams decreased both cracking and ultimate torques. Repairing of the beam specimens with steel plates increased ultimate torque, ultimate rotation angle and torsional toughness. Repairing with full steel plates or steel plate strips increased the ultimate torque by 38%, 11%, respectively. Moreover, in case of increasing the steel plate thickness from 3 mm to 6 mm, the ultimate torque increased by 38% and 53%, respectively. Finally, the ultimate torque increased by 38% and 114% respectively after repairing with full steel plates with thickness of 3 mm in case of increasing the opening width from 300 mm to 500 mm |
