Abstract

Summary
Sexual assault is a common social disorder among students. Sexual assault is any sexual act performed by one person on another without the persons consent Van Deherny (2007). The rates of sexual assault on college campuses continue to rise, the need for innovative approaches for prevention becomes more urgent (Zachary, 2008).
Moreover, the physical and psychological effects of sexual assault can be devastating. College students who are sexually assaulted may face impediments to academic and personal success sexual assault prevention is a college health priority. Sexual assault linked to a variety of health problems such as more frequent and severe somatic symptoms, poorer health perceptions, higher rates of chronic disease, increased utilization of medical services, and greater functional limitations. Importantly, sexual assault has also been associated with sexual health symptoms including pelvic pain, excessive menstrual bleeding, urinary problems, and sexual difficulties (Erin & Marsha, 2008).
The present study aimed to assess students’ perception regard sexual assault and reaction towards it. To achieve the study objective, a descriptive study had been implemented at Faculty of Nursing - Ain Shams University.

One hundred ninety five students were included on the study using a systematic simple random sample technique ”computerized technique was used for randomly select first student from each students list” then every third one was selected till the end of previous predetermined sample size
Data collection has been carried out through the period from the beginning of November 2011 till the end of April 2012. Two tools of data were used first tool was interviewing questionnaire sheet named nursing student’s perception regarding sexual assault and reaction towards it to assess socio- demographic characteristics of nursing students, knowledge regard sexual assault ”perception about sexual assault, kind of sexual assault, factors that lead to sexual assault, and impact of sexual assault. Second tool was Personality traits assessed by NEO- five factory inventory ”NEO- FFI” that used to assess students personal traits. The Neo contains 150 items and three validity items, and requires a 5th-grade reading level. So, it consisted of five major personality traits each one of them included 6 point.
The present study revealed that:
• Students’ age range between 18-23 year with mean age (20.05 ± 1.27). Concerning their marital status 96.6% of students are single. Regarding their residence 79.5% of students are raise on rural area. In addition, 83.1% of students have hair cover as nature of their uniform.
• Concerning students’ knowledge 7.3%, 8.8%, 35.9%, 15.9% and 0.5% only of students’ have complete knowledge about concept of sexual assault, kind of verbal assault, kind of physical assault, kind of assault through vision, and places of sexual assault respectively.
• Regarding sexual assault factors 3.6%, 3.1%, 2.6%, 4.6% and 3% only of students’ have complete knowledge about girls factors, family factors, media factors, economic factors , religious factors and young man factors as a factors lead to sexual assault respectively.
• As regard impact of sexual assault 13.3%, 11.7% and 14.3%, only of students’ have completely psychological impact, completely Physical impact and completely Social impact of sexual assault respectively.
• Concerning students’ expected reaction toward sexual assault 61.0% of students’ have positive expected reaction regarding sexual assault as reported by them. While, 25.6% of them have uncertain expected reaction. Moreover, 13.3% of them have negative expected reaction regarding sexual assault as reported by them.
• There is a highly statistical significant difference between students’ knowledge regarding sexual assault and their age, marital status, residence, and nature of uniform. While, that there is a statistical significant difference between students’ knowledge regarding sexual assault and their academic year and arrangement between sisters.
• There is a highly statistical significant difference between students’ expected reaction regarding sexual assault and their age, marital status, and residence. While, that there is no statistical significant difference between students’ expected reaction regarding sexual assault and their academic year, arrangement between sisters, and nature of uniform.
• There is a statistical significant difference between students’ expected reaction regarding sexual assault and their mothers’ education.
In conclusion, the study revealed that majority of female nursing students had low level of knowledge regarding concept, kind of sexual assault, and factors that lead to sexual assault this answer of research question number one. However, more than half of nursing students had increase heart rate as a in completely affect by sexual assault. Meanwhile, more than half of nursing students use facial features to express anger as a reaction of sexual assault. Finally, most of nursing student view that religious education is coping strategy to fight sexual assault this answer of research question number two. Based on this finding, the researcher recommended; conduction of awareness session for all students at different academic level regarding sexual assault. Also, training student’s about effective protective strategies against sexual assault to reduce its impact. Further researches are still need to explore barriers to report the event of sexual assault.
