Abstract

Epilepsy is a common neurological condition affecting individuals of all ages, gender and socioeconomic status. Once diagnosed, many patients with epilepsy can be well treated with anti-seizure drugs. Those who continue to have fits despite adequate treatment with at least two anti-epileptic drugs are diagnosed as having drug resistant epilepsy according to the ILAE definition.
Management of DRE remains a challenge and requires early identification of those at risk to prevent social and health- related negative consequences of poorly controlled seizures.
The exact mechanisms underpinning DRE are not completely understood and remain hypothetical. However, several factors have been correlated with the risk of evolution to DRE.
Our study aimed at studying the prevalence of DRE among adult epileptic patients. In addition, the study aimed at identifying different risk factors that are associated with DRE.
The study identified a total number of 352 adult patients with epilepsy attended Alexandria university hospitals in the period between March 2021 and August 2021. The patients were classified into three groups as following: 142 (40.3%) drug-responsive, 90 (25.5%) drug-resistant, and 120 (34%) undefined. The undefined group included those with non-compliance to treatment or severe adverse effects to treatment, patients with unidentified or unreliable seizure frequency records, individuals with history of alcohol or drug abuse and those diagnosed with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures and were excluded from the analysis.
