Abstract

With technology infiltrating every aspect of our life and our world becoming fully digital, protection of confidential information and insuring security is more difficult that it has ever been. Passwords and keys were once treated as a trusted way to provide security and person identification but now they are becoming increasingly weak against the sophisticated hacking and spoofing tools used. Within this framework, upcoming state-of-the-art technologies do not fully meet users’ needs, and still present a number of challenges : 1. Fingerprint recognition-based systems are vulnerable to different types of attacks, such as spoofing, 2. Palm vein biometrics require physical contact with a biometric device leading to hygienic limitations, as well as computational complexities that limit its implementation. 3. Face recognition based systems are also vulnerable to certain types of attacks plus they have a high FAR “False acceptance rate” compared to other techniques. 4. Iris scanning based systems are invasive and their application is also used and will remain limited to very high secure places that the user will not refuse the scanning procedures. The importance of having hygiene but effective and secure biometric solution for person identity verification is on the highest levels, with the spreading of infectious diseases like (COVID-19) the necessity of having such system is very important to places, organizations and companies that requires high level of security and access control, airports and hospitals are the main beneficiary of such technology. A novel system for contactless identity verification using fingerprint and palm veins, that achieves higher FAR than other contactless systems like face recognition and is less invasive like Iris scanning has been developed.
