Abstract

Background: The postnatal period is most critical, but often a most neglected phase for mothers and babies. Women need coping to reduce their stress in this period. Aim of study: to study the effect of discharge guideline on maternal coping during postpartum period. Subjects and Methods: The study was carried out in the antenatal care (ANC) clinic of family health units in Port-said city using a quasi-experimental design. It included 160 nulliparous pregnant women randomized into eighty for study group for application of the study intervention (discharge guidelines), and eighty for control group. Data were collected using three tools firstly; an interview questionnaire covering demographic and obstetric characteristics, a learning needs assessment sheet, and knowledge, and postpartum practice sheet, secondly; coping with motherhood scale, and finally; perceived stress scale. The fieldwork lasted from March 2019 to August 2020. Results: Women in both groups had similar characteristics. At post-intervention, study group women had significantly better knowledge, more adequate practice, better problem-focused , while less emotion-focused coping, and less stress (p<0.001). The multivariate analysis identified the study intervention as a positive predictor of women’ knowledge, practice, and problem-focused coping scores, and negative predictor of their emotion-focused coping and stress score. Conclusion: The discharge guideline is effective improving women’s postpartum knowledge and practice, coping, and stress. Recommendations: The study recommends adoption of the discharge guidelines in the study settings as well as in all family health units. Further studies are proposed to assess its effectiveness on prevention of postpartum depression.
