Abstract

Background: Post‐traumatic stress disorders are severe psychiatric disorders, which might develop after a traumatic event, like cancer diagnosis, and threatens the patient’s psychological and/or physiological integrity. Aim: This study aimed to explore the relation between post-traumatic stress disorders, coping strategies and hope level among cancer patients. Subjects and Method: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. The study subjects consisted of 183 cancer patients from the inpatients department at Sohag oncology center. Three tools were utilized to collect data which were the Post-traumatic Stress Disorders Scale, Coping Strategies Rating Scale and Herth Hope Index (HHI), In addition to personal and clinical data sheet. Results: The study revealed that, more than two thirds of the studied cancer patients had a moderate level of post- traumatic stress disorders, and depended on active role more than passive role coping strategy in dealing with post-traumatic stress disorders associated with cancer and more than half of the studied cancer patients had a moderate level of hope. Conclusion: There was a highly statistically significant positive correlation between total score of post-traumatic stress disorders and mean score of affective-oriented coping strategies. A highly statistically significant negative correlation between total score of post-traumatic stress disorders and mean score of problem-oriented coping strategies. Also, there was a highly statistically significant negative correlation between total scores of post-traumatic stress disorders and total scores of hope among the studied cancer patients. Recommendations: Need for therapeutic and psycho-educational programs-including counseling for those patients with cancer and their families, support groups, and behavioral therapy for patients with post-traumatic stress disorders and other psychiatric disorders.
