Abstract This study evaluates the efficacy of erythropoietin (EPO) in enhancing nerve regeneration after induced tibial nerve injury in dogs. Twenty-seven healthy mongrel dogs were divided into three groups. Control group (tibial nerve injury without EPO treatment), local group (treated with EPO locally after injury), and systemic group (treated with systemic injection of EPO after induction of tibial nerve injury). Lameness assessment score, hematological analysis, electrophysiological and histopathological examinations were carried out for assessment of the healing process during the study period (12 weeks). The study indicated that EPO has a neurotrophic and neuro-regenerative effect in treating tibial nerve injury in dogs, with nearly the same outcomes in both systemic and local groups. |
