Abstract

Background; There are a growing number of neurological deficits associated with COVID-19. Audiovestibular symptoms during the acute stage have been reported in patients with COVID-19 infection, while very few studies investigated the long-term audiovestibular manifestations of SARS-CoV-2,
Aims; to investigate the extent of affection of audio-vestibular system in posts COVID-19 Egyptian subjects and to find out the clinical profile of audio-vestibular disorders in post COVID-19 Egyptian subjects if any,
Subjects and methods; This was a two stage study; stage one developing and validation of COVID-19 screening questionnaire for audio-vestibular symptoms in Arabic language. It was filled by a total number of 1015 subjects. Stage two, a subgroup of subjects (n.=105), with persistent audiovestibular complaints post COVID-19 infection were selected for detailed audiovestibular evaluation and compared to 50 normal healthy volunteers with completely negative history of COVID-19 infection.
Result; Audiovestibular symptoms were reported in 527 subjects (52%). Dizziness was the most commonly reported symptom by 37% followed by earache and hyperacusis 24%, 23.5% of subjects respectively. Tinnitus and hearing loss were reported by 20%, 18% of subjects respectively.
Conclusion; Nearly half of subjects with COVD 19 infection could present with at least one of the audiovestibular manifestations in particular during the acute phase “first 15 days post infection”.
