Abstract

Background: Hearing loss is now the world’s fourth largest cause of disability. The goal of the study was to detect hearing loss in newborns using auditory brainstem response tests: The rate of occurrence and the factors that increase the risk. Design: A cross-sectional research design was used. Sample: 463 neonates included in the study were calculated using the Epi Info program. Setting: This study was conducted at Minia Eastern Health Center and Minia Western Health Center in Minia City. Tools: two tools were used; Tool I: included four parts: Mother and neonate Socio-demographic data, mother’s medical history, mother and neonates risk factors. Tool II: Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test. Results: the minority (13.6%) of the studied neonates had hearing loss and most common maternal risk factors were cesarean section delivery, gestational diabetes, haemophiles influenza, pre-eclampsia, premature rupture of membrane, perinatal infections, thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy and streptococcus pneumonia. Nearly one-third of the studied neonates who had hearing loss was the first child and more than half was the second to fifth child in family members, with statistically significant differences. Conclusion: Preterm newborns are 2.8 times more likely to develop hearing loss than full-term neonates, and those with a family history are 1.7 times more likely. Hearing loss was 0.2 times more likely in neonates with respiratory distress and hypoxia than normal breathing. Hyperbilirubinemia in newborns increased hearing loss by 1.3%. Also, neonates admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for more than four days were 3.5 times greater than others. Recommendation: Health education to mothers about the risk factors of hearing loss.
