Abstract

This thesis aims to shed light on the function of linguistic content and linguistic innovations of Lewis Carroll in Alice’s books from a pragmatic stylistic perspective. The study focuses on ”Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and ”Through the Mirror” where the process of inference extends beyond mere lexical or grammatical components and focuses on intended meanings. It was found that Carroll was able to ”make the words perform and do a lot of functions to give the language of expression additional contents that contribute enormously to the statement of the writer’s intentions and reveal the intent, not just the saying.”The implication of linguistic nonsense was apparently couched in the methods Carroll used to highlight its intended meaning: parodies and linguistic oppositions (i.e., mocking words, style, thought, or other form of action) that reflect the then prevailing nonsense and absurdities in Alice’s world,Metaphor (such as that of ”The Blessing of Tears”) linking the turbulent world of Wonderland with the nightmare (and by association with our world as well), the formal poem (Carmen figuratum), the invention and articulation of new words, the meaningful designations and the suggestive structural poems which are first-letter plural Its verses were a noun or a sentence, and they are verses, the first of which is a phrase, and the irregular suffix. Linguistic inclusion has been the umbrella under which these features worked into a masterful wrap. All these heresies were woven in a masterful and distinct weave, and the language seemed to be coherent between warp and weft. And here is the author brilliantly violating the stereotypical rules of language and the accepted rules of logic through the influence of nonsense that produces an excess of meaning, and this does not reflect a scarcity or lack of meaning. Thus creating an interwoven fabric in all its components. It should be noted that Carroll used the character of Alice to make free judgments and insightful commentaries on life and society in the Victorian era.
