Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of using reciprocating motion with reciproc files versus adaptive motion using twisted file adaptive on postoperative pain after instrumentation of necrotic mandibular molars. In the present study, Fifty-eight patients were included in the study with, 29 patients in Reciproc group and 29 patients in TF adaptive group having mandibular molar teeth diagnosed to have necrotic pulps with symptomatic or asymptomatic apical periodontitis. Instrumentation was done with Reciproc files in control group and TF adaptive files in experimental group. Root canal treatment was done in two visits with obturation in the second visit.Postoperative pain was assessed using NRS at 6 intervals ; 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 1 week. Microbiologic sample was taken with paperpoints before instrumentation, after instrumentation and before obturation for counting of CFU. Duration of instrumentation was recorded.Pain was assessed 6, 12 and 24 hours after obturation using NRS. Number of analgesic tablets taken was recorded. Mann Whitney U test was used to compare NRS scores between groups and Freidman test to compare within groups. A p-value less than or equal to 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results of the present study showed that there was no statistically significant difference between two groups in mean values post instrumentation and post obturation pain at all time intervals. Also no statistically significant difference was found between two groups in percentage of pain free patients and patients having no, mild, moderate or severe pain. No statistically significant difference in mean number of analgesic tablets taken
