Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia is a major obstetric problem affecting 2-8 % of all pregnancies and a significant cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. We aim to determine the significance of different platelet indices in detecting the presence and severity of preeclampsia in pregnant primigravidas. Methods: This study was designed as a case-control study and conducted in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital {u2013} Kasr Al Ainy faculty of medicine during the time interval from December 2019 to September 2020. A total of 150 consenting Primigravidas, within 24 hours before delivery, were included in the study with 50 cases of severe preeclampsia, 50 cases of non-severe preeclampsia, and 50 healthy Primigravidas as controls. Results: In our study, there was statistically significant lower Platelet Count (PLT) in primigravidas with severe preeclampsia in comparison with both healthy primigravidas, and those with non-severe preeclampsia (p=0.001, and 0.000 respectively). Moreover, there was statistically significant lower Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) in both groups of preeclampsia in comparison with healthy primigravidas (p=0.000 for each). However, there was no statistically significant difference in Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) values among the three study groups (p>0.05 for each)
