Abstract Aim: The aim of the present clinical study is to assess the gain in clinical attachment level when vitamin C is added to PRF with open flap debridement compared to PRF and open flap debridement alone in the surgical treatment of periodontal intrabony defects in patients with stage III periodontitis. Methodology: Twenty sites in 11 patients, with a mean (±SD) age of 30.2 (±7) years, showing intrabony defects were selected and divided into intervention group where open flap debridement was performed with the application of combination of platelet rich fibrin (PRF) and vitamin C and control group: where open flap debridement was performed with application of PRF alone. All the selected sites were assessed with the clinical and radiographic parameters such as probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession depth, and radiographic bone fill. All the clinical and radiographic parameter values obtained at different intervals (baseline, 3, and 6 months) were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Both groups in this study showed a statistically significant reduction in PPD and gain in CAL, 3 and 6 months postoperatively compared to baseline values without any significant difference when compared to each other. The intervention group showed a mean absolute PPD reduction of 3.4 (±1) mm, [95% CI] [2.5, 4.35] after 3 months and 3.5 (±1) mm, [95% CI] [2.6, 4.4] at 6 months, while the mean absolute CAL gain reported were 4 mm (±0.9) [95% CI] [3, 4.8] and 4.1 mm (±0.1) [95% CI] [3.2, 4.9] at 3 and 6 months respectively. Concerning control group, the mean absolute PPD reduction was 4.1 (±0.6), [95% CI] [3.6, 4.7] after 3 months and 4.1 (±0.6) mm [95% CI] [3.5, 4.7] at 6 months with a corresponding gain in CAL of 4.3 mm (±1.1) [95% CI] [3.2, 5.3] and 3.9 mm (±1.1) [95% CI] [2.8, 5] respectively |
