Abstract

Wastes as well as agrochemical in water streams might increase the level of pesticides, and PCBs, in River Nile and subsequently in surface and ground water. In Egypt there are no regular monitoring programmes concerning the identification and determination of different pollutants in the environment, although Egypt is the largest pesticide market in Arabian countries and the fourth largest importer of pesticides among developing countries. Aim of Study: This study are to evaluate the levels of various chemical pollutants such as highly toxic organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls in aquatic environment (sediment, water and fish) at three sites in Cairo, Qalubia and Giza governorate, Egypt. Samples were taken from Nile River (Helwan zone), AL-Ismalia canal , and ALMarutia Canals The obtained results could summarize in the following points: 1. Pesticide residues A. Organochlorine pesticides A.1. Organochlorine pesticide residues in water and sediment. Ü -BHC concentration in water was found 1.23 to 3.55og/L. in summer season. It was not found in autumn andwinter season The total Þ-BHC concentration in water were recorded as in summer 2.21to 5.90 og /L. in winter not found but in autumn was 2.54og/L. in site three only
