Abstract

Purpose: To quantify the vessel density of the radial peripapillary capillary plexus (RPCs) in diabetic patients without clinical signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR) or with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and to correlate vessel density with the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, with comparison to age {u2013} matched normal individuals. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 96 eyes of 48 participants included. Subjects divided into 3 groups: No DR, mild to moderate NPDR and control.. Using 4.5mm {u00D7} 4.5 mm scan centered on the optic nerve; the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) plexus vessel density and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were quantified. Results: The no DR and NPDR groups showed lower peripapillary VD of the RPCs compared with the control group. Yet, there was no significant difference in VD between the 2 diabetic groups. No statistically significant difference in the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness found among the 3 groups. Correlation between vessel density and RNFL thickness found only in NPDR group of patients. Changes in peripapillary OCTA parameters may help with understanding the pathophysiology of DM and this can be a potential tool to monitor diabetic patients before the appearance of clinical changes
