Abstract

Background: Many subjects with flexible flat feet (FFF) walk with certain alterations in the kinematics of the lower extremity. As rear foot eversion causes the tibia and the femur to internally rotate, it leads to excessive strain at the knee. Considering iliotibial band (ITB) attachments, rotation of the femur and/or tibia might increase strain at the distal attachment site. It was found that increasing the ITB tension had vital impact on knee kinematics. Objectives: The intention of the study was to determine the effect of bilateral FFF on ITB flexibility and on knee joint kinematics during squatting. Methods: Eighty eight participants (44 with bilateral FFF and 44 healthy subjects without flat feet) had participated in this study, their age ranged from 18-35 years. Each participant undergone measurement of ITB flexibility by modified ober test using bubble inclinometer, frontal plane projection angle (FPPA) and hip adduction angle (HADD) using Kinovea software for motion analysis. Results: The results clarified that there was no difference between the two groups in the ITB flexibility, FPPA and HADD during squatting. The results showed also that there were no correlations between ITB flexibility and FPPA and HADD angle. The results clarified that there was negative weak correlation between FPPA and HADD angle during squatting
