Abstract

Aims: The aim of the study is to compare in a randomized clinical trial the clinical/radiographic outcomes of Potassium nitrate in polycarboxylate cement and MTA as pulpotomy biomaterials used for asymptomatic vital immature permanent lower first molars Subjects and Methods: A total of 50 molars of 48 children aged 6{u2013}9 years were selected and were randomly divided into two groups, each comprising of 25 molars. group I and group II, in which Potassium nitrate in polycarboxylate cement and MTA were used as a pulpotomy medicament. After performing pulpotomy and covering the radicular pulps with the biomaterials, all teeth were permanently restored. The children were recalled 1 week, 6 and 12 months for clinical and radiographic evaluation. The digital radiographs were imported to Photoshop software (Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended ME) to perform the measurements of the change in root length and apical foramen diameter. This study was designed as double{u2011}blinded randomized clinical trial. Statistical analysis showed p value of significant set as p<0.005. Results: The follow{u2011}up evaluations revealed that 46 teeth appeared to be clinically and radiographically successful at 12 months{u2019} postoperative evaluation. Only one tooth in every group reported pain and periapical lesion. Overall success rate for all the material was 95.8%, MTA and Potassium nitrate in polycarboxylate cement
