Retrospective study, oncological and functional outcome following curettage of benign tumors of the calcaneus and the talus

Abstract
Aim: The standard treatment of most of the benign tumors of the talus and the calcaneus traditionally has been intralesional curettage.The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the oncological and functional outcomes of patients with benign tumors of talus and calcaneus treated by curettage.Materials and methods: During the period from July 2001 to April 2021, we conducted a retrospective clinical study to assess the functional and oncological outcome after curettage of benign tumors of talus and calcaneus. The study was done in Cairo university hospitals with a total number of 41 patients. The age ranged from 5 years to 49 years (mean 23.68 years), of 10 females and 31 males.The follow up period ranged from 6 months to 240 months (mean 88.68). Results: The mean functional MSTS score was 28.12. Higher functional MSTS scores were observed in latent lesions compared to active or aggressive lesions (p < 0.05), lesions treated with simple curettage compared to those which treated with extended curettage (p < 0.05). Recurrence rate was 9.8 % (4 patients of 41). In aneurysmal bone cyst it was 20 % (2 patients of 10), in chondromyxoid fibroma it was 50 % (1 patient of 2), and in epithelioid hemangioendothelioma it was 33.3% (1 patient of 3). All of the recurrences occurred within three years after surgery (range from 11 to 31 months). No recurrence was encountered in latent tumors.No recurrence was encountered in patients with chondroblastoma. The complication rate was 12.2% (5 patients of 41).Subtalar arthritis occurred in 2 patients (4.9%), infection in 2 patients (4.9%), and wound gapping in one patient (2.4%)
