Abstract

Aim: This study compared the effect of different preventive regimens containing fluoride toothpaste and chlorhexidine mouthwash with or without MI varnish on Cariogram parameters and caries index of high caries risk patients. Methodology: A total of 66 participants were divided into three groups according to the tested regimen, either A1: fluoride toothpaste with chlorhexidine mouthwash, A2: fluoride toothpaste with chlorhexidine mouthwash with MI varnish or A3: fluoride toothpaste only (control group). All Cariogram parameters and caries index were evaluated and recorded at baseline, after 3 months, 6 months and after 12 months. Statistical analysis was performed with significance level set at P{u2264}0.005. Results: All Cariogram variables showed overall improvement in scores starting from three months of usage. The green, red and light blue sectors showed statistically significant difference in all groups. MI varnish group showed the best results followed by chlorhexidine mouthwash group and finally the control group using fluoride toothpaste only. The results for caries risk profile showed statistically significant difference within the same group at different time intervals and between groups. Both MI varnish group and chlorhexidine group showed change in caries risk profile from high to low, while the control group changed from high to moderate only. The results for caries risk indices showed no statistically significant difference either within each group or between groups
