Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to assess validity and reliability of cone beam computed tomography of semiautomatic segmentation in volumetric measurements of maxillary sinus using different software. Methodology: Phase I in vitro: 21 maxillary sinuses of dry human skulls were acquired from the Anatomy department, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. Phase II in vivo: 12 maxillary sinuses of patients who came to Oral and Maxillofacial Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University for CBCT imaging for orthodontic treatment. The radiographic imaging of the skulls and the patients by CBCT machine was performed in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. CBCT images were taken from workstation of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Department, Cairo University as DICOM file format. The volumetric measurements of the maxillary sinuses were conducted using semi-automatic segmentation of different software: Romexis 4.2.6.R., Mimics Medical 19.0 & Ondem and 3D and compared with the gold standard of real volumetric measurements in phase I (skulls) and of volumetric measurements of manual segmentation in phase II (patients). Results: The results revealed an excellent intra and inter-observer reliability of the three investigated software in both in-vitro and in-vivo sections. Regarding the validity of in-vitro section; there was no significant difference with the gold standard versus Ondemand3D & Romexis (p= 0.164 & 0.296), while Mimics revealed a significant difference difference between measured differences (p<0.001). The highest difference was found in Mimics (-0.92±0.68) followed by Ondemand (0.28±0.87) while the lowest difference was found with Romexis (-0.25±1.05)
