Abstract Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent type of arthritis which cause pain and incapacity worldwide forcing us to find best treatment options. Shock wave (SW) is a form of acoustic energy that rapidly propagates through 3 dimensional space. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) arises when SW is generated externally via generators and directed to the area to be treated. ESWT has remarkable therapeutic outcomes in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Objective: To determine the efficacy of ESWT in primary knee OA patients in terms of knee pain, function, range of motion (ROM) and quality of life (QOL).Study Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data Sources: An electronic search was conducted on the PubMed, PEDro and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases from their inception until June 11, 2020. Methods: The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions was used to guide this review. The following studies were considered for review: randomized controlled trials ; Populations with a diagnosis of primary knee OA aged 45 years or more with Kellgren-Lawrence classification and no neurological disorder; and ESWT as intervention. The mean difference (95% confidence interval) of homogenous outcomes measures were calculated and pooled in a meta-analysis.Results: The review included seven articles containing 520 participants; however, the meta-analysis included only five studies. |
