Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted for comparing the effect of low level laser therapy (LLLT) versus pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) in treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Subjects: Forty females suffering from primary dysmenorrhea were distributed randomly into two groups equal in number ;their ages ranged from 20-25 years old and their body mass index ranged from 18-25; group (A) was treated by LLLT for 3 consecutive menstrual cycles, while group (B) was treated by PEMF for 3 consecutive menstrual cycles. Methods: was done by serum cortisol level and scores of menstrual distress questionnaire, were evaluated before as well as after treatment. Results: There were significant reductions in serum cortisol level and scores of menstrual distress questionnaire within both groups (A & B) (p<0.05). Comparing both groups post-treatment found that there was a significant reduction in serum cortisol level with favor of group (B) (p<0.05). However, there was a non-significant difference of menstrual distress questionnaire scores between both groups post-treatment (p>0.05). Conclusion: Both low level laser therapy and pulsed electromagnetic field are effective methods in primary dysmenorrhea management, with a better effect of pulsed electromagnetic field on reducing serum cortisol levels
