Abstract

Introduction: Despite the breast volume being an essential metric component of any aesthetic or reconstructive breast surgery, up to date there has been no accepted measurement technique that is globally accepted by breast surgeons. Appropriate measurement might lead to decrease of the reoperation rates. We introduced a novel technique that provide simple accurate volume measurement . Methods: 22 patients(22 breasts) with breast cancer who were scheduled for modified radical mastectomy were included in this study. Preoperative breast volume measurement was done using our novel device and as well as breast volume measurement using casting method, breast MRI and mammogram studies which had been done for all patients, meanwhile the gold standard technique (Archimedes, water displacement technique) was used to measure the volume of breast specimen following mastectomy.Patients were divided into 2 groups according to their breast volume; patients with breast volume less than 500cc and patients with breast volume(500cc-1000cc), and the measurements were compared in each groups using the all methods. Results: There was strong +ve correlations between the measurements of the device and the measurement of gold standard technique (r.=0.994) in the 22 patients. In group 1 (breast volume < 500cc) there was strong correlation between the device and gold standard (r.=0.973). In group 2 (breast volume 500cc {u2013} 1000cc) there was also strong correlation between the device and gold standard (r.=0.999)
