Abstract

Internationally, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a considerable public health concern due to the excessive dietary consumption of high caloric diet and subsequent obesity. Additionally, splenectomy is considered as one of major common risk factor for NAFLD.There are no effective therapeutic strategies for NAFLD treatment although it being the most common chronic liver disease. Therefore, the ongoing study aims to evaluate the possible efficacy of Holothuria arenicola extract (HaE) against hepatic steatosis in obese splenectomized (SPX) rats. In the current investigation, the fatty acid analysis of HaE revealed the presence of various saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Additionally, the ongoing study revealed that HaE is potent antiinflammatory agent. Furthermore; oral administration of HaE for 30 days caused a significant amelioration in all the hematological parameters relative to untreated obese splenectomized rats. Markedly, HaE treatment significantly enhanced hepatic function, as displayed by the reduction in liver enzyme activities such as ALAT, ASAT, GGT, LDH and ALP as well as the increase of protein and albumin content. Concerning lipid metabolism, HaE treatment caused a marked enhancement in lipid metabolism, as revealed by the decreased total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol contents as well as the increased HDL- cholesterol level
