Abstract
Background: Uremic pruritus (UP) is a common and distressing complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Extreme UP is strongly associated with sleep disturbance, depression, impaired quality of life, and mortality. Objective: The purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and narrow band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) in treatment of uremic pruritus in hemodialysis patients with chronic renal failure. Subjects and Methods: This randomized study was conducted in 30 patients of both genders with uremic pruritus divided into two equal groups.(group A) received conventional TENS on back area for 30 minutes, (group B) received NB-UVB therapy according to erythema1.both groups received physical therapy treatment for two months with medical treatment (antihistamine and topical emollients). Assessment was done pre and post treatment by visual analogue scale(VAS) and 10-points Pruritus questionnaire. Results: showed there was no statistical significant difference between both groups regarding mean value of VAS which measured severity of pruritus, as pre treatment (P= 0.683) , after 4weeks of treatment (P= 0.512) and after 8 weeks treatment (P= 0.624). Also there was no statistical significant difference between both groups post treatment in frequency of pruritus and sleep disturbances. Conclusion: Application of both conventional transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation TENS and narrow band ultraviolet B NBUVB had a significant effects on treatment of uremic pruritus in hemodialysis patients but NBUVB was more clinically effective than TENS
