Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of perforation repair materials such as Biodentine, Retro MTA and Portland Cement on the fracture resistance of teeth with simulated perforating internal root resorption cavities. Methodology: Thirty-five extracted human, single-rooted mandibular premolar teeth were decoronated. Seven teeth were assigned as negative control group. Remaining roots were instrumented with Revo-s rotary files and standardized internal resorption cavities were prepared on the middle third of the roots with round burs. Seven of the samples were not further interfered and were assigned as a positive control group. The apical third of the remaining root canals was obturated with single-cone technique and divided into 3 experimental groups according to the material used for repairing the resorptive cavities; group I: Biodentine, group II: RetroMTA, group III: Portland cement. The remaining coronal third of the root canals were then backfilled by thermoplasticized gutta percha till the coronal cut surfaces of the teeth. For assessment of fracture resistance teeth were embedded in acrylic resin blocks and subjected to a compressive load via the universal testing machine. The forces at which the fracture occurred were recorded and analyzed and assessment of the mode of fracture was doneusingstereomicroscope. Results: There was no significant difference found among the three experimental groups (p > 0.05).The Biodentine group showed higher fracture resistance values followed by the Portland cement group and the RetroMTA group respectively with no statistical significant difference among them
