Abstract

One of the major causes of surgical site infections (SSIs) is the inappropriate hand preparation. The choice of skin disinfectants and methods of skin preparation is still aberrant in health practice and interesting area to investigate by nursing students which appear during clinical training at operating room. Aim: The study was conducted to investigate the effect of alcohol based hand rub versus traditional scrubbing among nursing students.Research Hypotheses, H1: The students who will apply alcohol based hand rub had less total mean score of microbiological count comparing to the students who applied traditional surgical scrubbing.H2: The students who applied Alcohol based hand rub had less total mean score of hand dryness comparing to students used traditional surgical scrubbing Design: Randomized controlled trial (RCT) (Cross-over study), single blinded study. Two types of randomization were used first: systematic random sample for enrolling students to the study; second: simple random sample for allocation into two groups. Sample: 68 nursing students at medical surgical nursing II course for the academic year 2019-2020. Setting: Operating rooms at a governmental Hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Tools: A. WHO 2009 adapted questionnaire, B: Microbiological swab. Result: 54.4 % of students age were ranged between 22 to less than 25 years with mean+SD= 1.54+ 0.50, 75% of students never address lack of time, forgetfulness and skin damage as reasons of incompliance with sterilium, for overall evaluation of poviden- iodin (PI) 63.2% were satisfied of PI but did not met WHO benchmark. Regarding students overall evaluations to sterilium 97% were pleasant which exceed WHO benchmark
