Abstract

Background: Nurses{u2019} knowledge of ethical and legal aspects is the backbone of nurses{u2019} ethical practice and competencies in managing patient care. Aim: To examine the impact of ”ethical and legal issues in nursing” training program on nursing staff caring behavior.Design: A quasi-experimental (one group pretest/posttest) design utilized in this study. Setting: Two selected places Intensive care unit in Internal Medicine Hospital and the six floor with three zones in New Kasr Elini Teaching Hospital. Sample: A convenient sample of 60 nursing staff (i.e., four-unit managers and fifty-six staff nurses responsible for direct patient care). Tools: Modified Knowledge questionnaire sheet to assess nursing staff knowledge level regarding ethical and legal issues and modified observation checklist of nursing staff practice of ethical and legal issues. Also, a developed tool to assess nursing staff caring behavior. A developed program was designed about ethical and legal issues in nursing Results: There was a statistically significant difference among nursing staff knowledge of ethical issues total mean scores during (pre, immediately postprogram implementation and follow up phase) (F= 7.77, P .0001). There was highly statistically significant difference among nursing staff knowledge of legal issues total mean scores during program phases (F= 11.09, P .0001). There was a statistically significant difference between observed nurse’s practice of ethical issues total mean scores during (pre, immediately post-program implementation and follow up phase) (F= 21.50, P .0001). There was an insignificant statistical difference between observed nurse’s practice of legal issues total dimensions during (pre, immediately post-program implementation and follow up) (F= 5.194, P = 0.71)
