Abstract

Poly cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) a common health problem among teenagers and young women, it affects 5% to 10% of women in their reproductive years.
Poly cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was first described by Stein and Leventhal as a syndrome of oligo-amenorrhea and polycystic ovaries that was variably accompanied by hirsutism, acne, and obesity. As there is currently no curative treatment for PCOS, management of overweight/obese women with PCOS focuses on weight loss through regular exercise and diet, aiming to alleviate its clinical manifestations and lower the related risk of T2DM and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Pharmacological agents include combined oral contraceptive pills, anti-androgens and metformin, used separately or combined based on individual variations. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of polycystic ovarian syndrome among female medical student – Menoufia University, screen for comorbid metabolic abnormalities (type 2 diabetes and Dyslipidemia) in students with polycystic ovarian syndrome, endorse diet and exercise program for students with polycystic ovarian syndrome and assess the effect of the program on clinical and metabolic features of PCOS among female students with polycystic ovarian syndrome six months after implementation of the program.
The study was an interventional cross sectional study conducted at student health care clininc- Faculty of medicine-Menoufia University, 300 female medical students were recruited in the study and were chosen randomly from university female students list.
All the studied participants were evaluated through the following: Predesigned questionnaire that include questions about sociodemographic characteristics, ovulatory function, hyperandrogenism, co-morbidities, nutritional habits, exercise habits and family history and examination that included assessment of blood pressure, weight, height, waist circumference, hirsutism, acne vulgaris, and androgenic alopecia.
