Abstract

In recent years, Coastal cities have been facing variety of urban challenges. The phenomena of finding ways to achieve sustainability without affecting ecosystems requires more attention from the planning perspective. Water bodies, and vegetation, identified as blue and green infrastructures are core constituents in shaping sustainable and resilient coastal cities. Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) is acknowledged as a key factor for a sustainable management of storm water and flood resilience. Although the concept and practice are not-new, BGI is a practically new term. Recently, it offered multi ecosystem services, linking green corridors with their surrounding areas. However, its scale and detailed configurations possesses direct impacts on the quality of the city. This paper introduces UN-Habitat Model for investigating the potentials of applying the understandings of Blue-Green Infrastructure to coastal cities, case study New El-Alamin city, North coast of Egypt. It points out the procedures of planning urban development in such new coastal cities as one that could be directed by a (BGI) network that incorporates all of grey, green, and blue aspects for the attainment of a multifunctional urban form.
