Abstract

UTI is among the most common infections in the pediatric age group affecting nearly 150 million cases worldwide. It is the third most frequent cause of fever and in developed countries, febrile UTI is the predominant cause of morbidity after respiratory tract infection in children younger than two years old.
The bacteria causing UTI commonly gain access to the urinary system through ascending route, less commonly through hematogenous spread. The most common causative bacteria are E. coli, followed by others like klebsiella, proteus, enterobacter, and enterococcus species.
The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of urinary tract infection among febrile children admitted at Alexandria University Children’s Hospital and to identify the common bacterial causes of urinary tract infection among febrile children and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern.
This study was conducted in all febrile children with proven urinary tract infection who were admitted to Alexandria University Children’s Hospital over a period of six months from June 2021 to November 2021, all data was collected including the demographic data, symptoms, and signs, laboratory investigations, treatment received and samples were also taken for microbiological diagnosis including blood and urine samples.
1536 febrile patients were admitted during the research period, among which 103 were eligible in the current study. The findings in our study can be concluded as follows:
1. The prevalence of UTI among febrile children was 6.7% (103/1536 * 100)
2. The most common presenting symptoms among infants were the non-classical urinary symptoms including
