Abstract

 In the light of the results and answers on the research hypothesis, the study concluded that :
The intervention program reported remarkable improvement in knowledge , practice, and all domains of quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis after program implementation, where there were ahighly statistically positive correlation between patients’ knowledge and their practice (p.value > 0.018) in pre - program to be (p.value >0.596) in post - program , and between patients’ knowledge and their quality of life (p.value > 0.047) in pre program to be (p.value >0.136) in post- program.

Recommendations
 The findings of this study highlighted the following recommendations:
1. Increasing awareness of the patients about the importance of maintaining QoL of patients with osteoarthritis disease through campaigns ,mass media and social networks.
2. Availability of relevant written and visual information in osteoarthritis outpatients’ clinics to facilitate patients’ education about osteoarthritis disease such as educational booklets.
3. Conducting educational and training programs periodically and regularly to improve patients’ knowledge and practices related to osteoarthritis disease.
4. Psychosocial interventions with focusing on increasing the social relationship and social guidance that can reduce social isolation and consequently improve quality of life through counseling sessions.
5. Further studies including larger samples of patients with osteoarthritis from different geographical areas to generalize the results in Egypt.
Summary
Osteoarthritis disease is the most common form of joint damage and one of the pathological conditions that cause a decline in all health indicators. OA is a major cause of disability and consequent decline in the quality of life worldwide (Rakhimovna,2021). It is considered the third cause of disability in Egypt after cardiovascular diseases and back disorders (ElSayed, et al.,2020). OA severely impairs the affected individuals’ ability to carry out activities of daily livings including basic tasks, ability to work, and reduce physical and social capability, this limitation affected retired patients as well as those still working (Sabashi, et al.,2021).
The main goal of modern osteoarthritis disease treatment is to reduce the impact of the disease on patients’ lives through improving their quality of life and reducing disability. Treatment involves generally a combination of lifestyle modifications, exercise, medications, and surgery may be required as the last choice to improve quality of life (Sharma, 2021).
Community health nurse plays an important and basic role to empower patients through teaching knowledge and practice necessary to reach optimal safe performance in managing osteoarthritis disease according to three levels of prevention. Community health nurses also can help to reduce symptoms by implementing non-pharmacological methods and maintain healthy and positive adaptation in patients with osteoarthritis Bostock, (2021) and Johnson, (2021).
Aim of the study:
This study aimed to measure the outcomes of an intervention program for patients with osteoarthritis for improving their quality of life through:
1. Assess knowledge and practice of patients with osteoarthritis.
2. Assess different aspects of quality of life (physical, psychological, social, and environmental) for patients with osteoarthritis.
3. Implement an intervention program for patients with osteoarthritis disease.
4. Evaluate the effect of the intervention program on various aspects related to the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis.
Research Hypothesis:
-1Intervention program for patients with osteoarthritis disease will improve their knowledge and practice regarding osteoarthritis.
-2 Intervention program for patients with osteoarthritis disease will improve their quality of life
Study design:
A quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct this study.
Setting:
The study was conducted at orthopedic outpatients’ clinics at El.nil hospital for health insurance at Shubra El.kheima city - ELQalyubiyah Governorate. This setting is selected especially because it serves a large number of patients with osteoarthritis from different governorates.
Type: A purposive sample of 77 patients with osteoarthritis was selected.
Inclusion criteria were: Adult patients from 40 to 60 years diagnosed with osteoarthritis for A year at least, registered for follow up in the previously mentioned setting, not diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and not suffering from any type of physical disabilities or with any type of mental disorders.
Tools for data collection:-
Two tools were used for data collection :
The first tool: An Interviewing questionnaire constructed by the researcher after reviewing related works of literature included four parts.
Part 1: Socio-demographic data for patients with osteoarthritis
Part 2: included past and present medical history for patients with osteoarthritis
Part 3: Patients’ knowledge regarding osteoarthritis disease.
Part 4: Patients’ practice regarding osteoarthritis diseases as reported by patients.
A tool was used to assess the practice of patients with osteoarthritis, it was adapted by the researcher from Western Ontario and Mc master osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC).
The second Tool: Quality of life for patients with osteoarthritis disease: World Health Organization (WHOQOL-BREF) assessed four domains (physical, psychological, social, and environmental).
The results of the study sample could be summarized as follows :
 There was a highly statistically significant difference between pre and post-program related to patients’ total knowledge about osteoarthritis disease. where less than a tenth had a satisfactory level in pre-program and improved to all patients in post-program.
 There was a highly statistically significant difference between pre and post-program related to patients’ total practice regarding osteoarthritis disease. where three quarters had a satisfactory level in pre-program and improved to all patients in post-program.
 There was a highly statistically significant difference between pre and post-program related to patients’ total quality of life. where afew of patients were at a high level in pre-program and improved in post-program to be more than three-fifths.
- In conclusion, the intervention program reported remarkable improvement in knowledge, practice, and quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis after program implementation.
The findings of this study highlighted the following recommendations:
1. Increasing awareness of the patients and community about the importance of maintaining QoL of patients with osteoarthritis disease through, campagins, mass media and social networks.
2. Availability of relevant written and visual information in osteoarthritis clinics or in outpatients clinics to facilitate patients education’ about osteoarthritis disease.
