Abstract

Now days, Cancer is one of the major disease that has affected human health and has a high rate of mortality. It is the second leading cause of cancer death among people; Lymphoma refer to is a type of cancer that begin in the lymphatic system when abnormal white blood cells grow. Lymphomas are the sixth most common form of cancer overall (Cancer Council, 2019).
There are two main types of lymphoma, which spreads and treated differently; Hodgkin and non- Hodgkin lymphoma. There are around 40 subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Causes of lymphoma still until now, unknown cause but may be more at risk in cases; ages between 15-40 years or older than 55 years for Hodgkin lymphoma and 60years or older for non- Hodgkin lymphoma. Also, lymphoma are more common in males, although certain subtypes may be more common in females and patients have a weak immune system from HIV/AIDs and an organ transplant (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 2020).
The treatment for lymphoma depends on type of lymphoma and its stage. Chemotherapy is uses drugs to kill cancer cells, radiotherapy which uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells and immune therapy uses body s’ immune system to attack cancer cells. Chemotherapy is one of major categories of medical discipline (National Cancer Institute, 2019).
Assessing nurses’ performance regarding care for patients with lymphoma plays important role and helps to identify ways to provide comprehensive supportive care for lymphoma patients. Nurses are provide care of a patients with lymphoma before, during and after chemotherapy and radiotherapy (Thomas, 2019).
Aim of study
This study aim to assess nurses’ performance regarding care for patients with lymphoma through the following:
1-Assess nurses’ level of knowledge regarding care of patients with lymphoma.
2-Assess nurses’ level of practice regarding care of patients with lymphoma.
3-Assess nurses’ level of attitude regarding care of patients with lymphoma.
Research Questions
• What is the nurses’ level of knowledge regarding care of patients with lymphoma?
• What is the nurses’ level of practice regarding care of patients with lymphoma?
• What is the nurses’ level of attitude regarding care of patients with lymphoma?
Research design:
A descriptive exploratory research design was used to achieve the aim of the study, exploratory-descriptive designs, usually field studies in natural settings, provide the least control over variables. The data collected either contribute to the development of theory or explain phenomena from the perspective of the persons being studied (Aamodt, 2018).
Research setting:
This study was conducted at oncology unit affiliated to Radiation Oncology& Nuclear medicine center at Ain-shams University hospitals, Cairo, Egypt.
Subjects:
A convenient sample of all available nurses who working in previous mentioned setting was included in the study, Sample size were 40 nurses.
Tool for data collection:
Three tools were developed and written in an Arabic language by the researcher to collect data pertinent to this study, these tools are:
1-Nurse’s self-administrated questionnaire.
2-Nurses’ practices observational checklist.
3- Nurses’ attitude questionnaire (Appendix III):
The results:
The study showed that, 52.5% of the studied nurses their age ranged between 30-<40 years, 77.5% and 67.5% of the studied nurses were female and married, respectively. Moreover, 55% of the studied nurses their years of experience ranged between 10-<15 years, In addition, 35% of the studied nurses attend training courses about nursing care for patients with lymphoma and 85.7% of them benefit from these courses.
The study revealed that 65% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of total knowledge regarding of the basic knowledge about lymphoma and the treatment of lymphoma, respectively. Also, 67.5% of them had unsatisfactory level of total knowledge about the nursing care for patients with lymphoma. While, 35% of the studied nurses had satisfactory level of total knowledge.
The present study showed that, 65% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of total knowledge about caring patients with lymphoma. While, 35% of the studied nurses had satisfactory level of total knowledge.
Regarding practice towards caring patients with lymphoma found that, 55% of the studied nurses were incompetent. While, 45% of them were competent regarding their total practice towards caring patients with lymphoma.
The present study shows that, 70% of the studied nurses had positive attitude regarding caring patients with lymphoma. While, 30% of them had negative attitude regarding caring patients with lymphoma.
There were highly statistically significant relation between nurses’ knowledge and practice about caring patients with lymphoma and their demographic data.
Conclusion:
Based on the findings of the current study, this study concluded that: More than two thirds of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of total knowledge about caring patients with lymphoma. Also, more than one half of the studied nurses were incompetent regarding their total practice towards caring patients with lymphoma. Less than three quarter of the studied nurses had positive attitude regarding caring patients with lymphoma.
Also, the results revealed that there was a statistically significant relation between total nurses’ knowledge and practice as regards to their demographic characteristics and there was highly statistically significant in relation between nurses’ demographic data and total attitude regarding caring patients with lymphoma. The present study revealed that, there is significant positive correlation between nurses’ knowledge, practice and total attitude regarding care for patients with lymphoma.
Recommendations:
In the light of the findings of the study, the following recommendations are suggested that:
1- Prepare and implement of educational program for nurses who caring for patients with lymphoma about knowledge, practice and communication skills between patients with lymphoma and nurses that need to improve high quality of health care, to meet needs and problems of patients with lymphoma.
2- Increase nurses awareness about policies and guidelines related to chemotherapy and radiotherapy administration.
3- Periodically, continuously and evaluation for nurses’ performance should be done to improve quality of their performance.
