Abstract
This study investigates translating jokes between English and Arabic. It examines humor and its various types and focuses on jokes as a common type of humor, their structures, forms, and types. Due to the distinctive linguistic and cultural features of jokes, they pose serious problems compared to other types of texts. It is a quantitative study that tackles the difficulties of translating jokes (with considerable attention to multi-modal jokes) between English and Arabic and strategies which are used by the undergraduate and MA students of the English Department at the Faculty of Languages, Sohag University when translating them. For the purpose of the study, instances of written and visual forms of English and Arabic, specifically Egyptian Arabic jokes, are analyzed. The data is collected randomly from different resources such as Facebook, Twitter, and others. Jokes are analyzed according to Zabalbeascoa’s classification of jokes (1996). Then, in terms of the solutions suggested by Zabalbeascoa (2005), the study attempts to clarify the difficulties which face future translators during the process of rendering such a unique type of content (jokes) from one language/culture into another. The findings of the study show that the majority of the students tend to employ literal translation strategy, which sometimes leads to a poor translation product, and the major problems encountered by the students were due to their inability to replicate the joke’s equivalent effect, as well as their inability to render the linguistic or cultural characteristics of some jokes between English and Arabic.
