Abstract

Generally, geographical information systemsare used in many domains. The power of GIS relies on its ability to store, link and visualize different related information to a location on a map. In consequence, it enables obtainingthe locations{u2019} information on the time of need fordecision-making. Unfortunately, searching for a specific address in GIS is a very complex problem especially when searching for human-written addresses. They almost are unstructured and have misspelling errors. Therefore, there aretwo main challenges for querying GIS using human-expressed spatial queries. The first challenge is concerned with fixing the misspelled errors. On the other hand, the second challenge is concerned with responding to such human-expressed unstructured spatial queries in a reliable manner. This work attempts to tackle these challenges by suggesting a method for correcting misspellings of words and it has been compared with some other methods of correcting misspellings. The results of the comparisons showed that the proposed approach is better in terms of recall and precision. On the other hand, a method has been proposed for analyzing a given human-expressed address and mapping it into a formal structure. In consequence, a search procedure takes place to get a reliable result for the intended address. The proposed approach has been compared with some modern applications in geographic systems. The results showed that the proposed approach is better in analyzing the address text and finding the location of the desired address
