Abstract

This study aimed to investigate Dunaliella salina (D. salina) microalgae as a source of some bioactive compounds. D. salina was grown on a lab scale with Bold Medium (BM) under different concentrations of urea (0.075, 0.15 and 0.3 g/L) and sodium chloride (100, 150 and 200 g/L). Dry weight and chlorophyll content were estimated to measure the growth rate of D. salina. D. salina was harvested by centrifugation and fatty acids profile was determined. The obtained results showed that the optimum growth of D. salina represented as chlorophyll content and dry weight was achieved at 100 g/L of NaCl and 0.075 g/L urea, therefore D. salina was grown in Photobioreactor (PBR) (4000 L) with the optimum concentrations. The results showed that fatty acid compositions were varied depending on salt and urea concentrations in the growth media. Ý-carotene (Ý-Car) and Zeaxanthin (ZEA) were determined using HPLC. The results showed that the Palmitic acid (C16 0) was the main saturated fatty acid in the D. salina, while Linolenic acid (C18 3 }3), Oleic acid (C18 1 }9), Palmitoleic acid (C16 1 }9), Hexagonic acid (C16 3 }4) and Linoleic acid (C18 2, }6) were the main omega fatty acids found in alga. Cultivation of D. salina under different concentrations of NaCl and Urea showed varied concentrations of fatty acids. The highest percent (72.12%) of total omega fatty acids, especially }3 (C18 3 }3) (30.37%) and the lowest percent (24.98%) of total saturated fatty acids, especially (C16 0) (10.57%) was found when 150 g/L of NaCl was applied. However, 0.075 g/L of urea showed the highest percent (70.96%) of total omega fatty acids, especially }3 (C18 3 }3; 23.29%) and the lowest percent (26.8%) of total saturated fatty acids, especially (C16 0; 12.50%). The HPLC analysis showed that the algae extract contains Ý-Car (19.167 mg/g) and ZEA ( 16.196 mg/g)
