Abstract Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the caries prevention and remineralization potential of varnish containing fluoride and CPP-ACP (MI Varnish), compared to sodium fluoride varnish with xylitol (Profluorid) on WSLs in primary maxillary anterior teeth. Methodology: Sixteen children with sixty-one active WSLs on primary maxillary anterior teeth were randomly selected. At baseline, the WSL was evaluated using ICDAS II and EDI index. Teeth were allocated to intervention group group I (GpI) MI Varnish [5% NaF with CPP-ACP], and group II (GpII) Profluorid, VOCO [5% NaF with xylitol]. First, oral hygiene instructions and diet counseling were given followed by application of fluoride varnishes in their respective groups. Reapplication of the varnishes were at 3, 6, and 9 months from the baseline. The same parameters were recorded at follow-up at 3, 6, 9, and 12-months intervals. Data were collected and subjected to statistical analysis Results: Overall, the active WSL changed to inactive over a period of 12 months in GpI was 96.7%, and 83.9% in GpII. There was a significant reduction in ICDAS score of WSL in GpI from (2.00±0.26) to (1.17±0.65) (p<0.001). Likewise, there was a reduction in ICDAS scores of WSL in GpII but not statistically significant from (2.00±0.26) to (1.87±0.76) (p = 0.433). There was a significant reduction in EDI score of WSL in GpI from (1.97±0.72) to (1.17±0.65) (p<0.001). Comparatively, GpII showed statistically significant reduction in the EDI scores from (2.45±1.21) to (1.74±1.46) (p<0.001) |
