Abstract

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) represent about 90% of all head and neck cancers, and the sixth most common non-skin cancer in the world, with an incidence of about 600,000 cases per year and a mortality rate approximating 50%. The mainstay of locally advanced oral cavity cancer treatment lies on surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy in case of high-risk pathological features. Methods : Our study was conducted over 25 patients with oral cavity SCC who received induction chemotherapy with TPF regimen, then underwent the appropriate surgical intervention. Conclusion : We tried in our study to identify the pathological complete responders to induction chemotherapy with TPF and predictors of such patients. The only significant predictor was the clinically node negative patients before induction chemotherapy and the tongue was the most common primary tumor site associated with pCR. Patients with pCR showed a better median DFS and less need for reconstructive flaps but still of non-statistical significance because of the small sample size.
