Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease is the primary cause of dementia in the middle-aged and elderly worldwide. It is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder manifested by cognitive disability commonly associated with neuropsychiatric disorders We induced Alzheimer’s disease model in male Albino Wister rats through intraperitoneal injection of AlCl3of 75 mg/kg/d for 60 days.Animals were randomly divided into the following 7 groups containing 10 rats group 1: Control rats were treated with saline I.P for 60 days group 2: Rats were treated with AlCl3 (75 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 60 days. group 3: Rats were treated with AlCl3 (75 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 60 days and rivastigmine (1 mg/kg/day I.P) for 2 weeks before AlCl3 injection and 6 weeks after starting AlCl3 injection group 4: Rats were treated with AlCl3 (75 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 60 days and naproxen (20 mg/kg/day I.P) for 2 weeks starting with AlCl3 injection.group 5: Rats were treated with AlCl3 (75 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 60 days and celecoxib (20mg/kg/day I.P) for 4 weeks starting with AlCl3 injection group 6: Rats were treated with AlCl3 (75 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 60 days, rivastigmine( 1 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 2 weeks before AlCl3 injection and 6 weeks after starting AlCl3 injection and naproxen (20 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 2 weeks starting with AlCl3 injection.group 7: Rats were treated with AlCl3 for 60 days and, rivastigmine ( 1 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 2 weeks before AlCl3 injection and 6 weeks after starting AlCl3 injection and with celecoxib (20 mg/kg/d, I.P) for 4 weeks starting with AlCl3 injection The results showed that in the novel object recognition test, rivastigmine, naproxen and celecoxib significantly increased recognition index indicating improved memory and learning. Also in passive avoidance test, rivastigmine, naproxen and celecoxib significantly increased retention latency demonstrating enhanced memory functions. In modified morris water maze test, rivastigmine, naproxen and celecoxib significantly decreased time to reach platform with greatly enhanced spatial memory compared to AlCl3 treated rats.
