Abstract

The current study was carried out to determine the occurrence of thermotolerant Campylobacter species in chicken, milk and human stool samples, identify the resistance profiles of the recovered campylobacter isolates and to assess the existence of the CDT gene subunits and flaA gene as a virulence marker in the recovered isolates. Moreover, epidemiological typing of virulent campylobacter isolates showing variable antimicrobial resistance phenotypes was investigated using flaA-RFLP-PCR assay.
The study was conducted during the period between March 2017 and September 2019. A total of 360 samples of animal (n= 308) and human (n= 52) origins were included in the study. Animal samples were obtained from broiler chickens at slaughter age (6 weeks; n = 248) and raw milk (n = 60); those were collected from local pluck shop outlets in Zagazig city, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. Chicken samples comprised of cloacal swabs (n = 95), breast meat (n = 55), cecal parts (n= 48) and internal organs (liver and spleen; n = 25, each). The human stool samples were collected from diarrheic children with gastroenteritis from various private laboratories at Zagazig city, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt.
