Abstract

The placenta act as a barrier that protects the embryo against the injurious agent. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used throughout the world, its metabolites can cross the placenta, change its structure. Ginger is a plant used in the treatment of vomiting during pregnancy. Additionally, its extracts were reported to have antioxidant action.
This Work aims to assess the histological and teratogenic effects of aspartame on the placenta and fetuses of albino rats and study the possible protective effect of ginger.
The study was carried out on fifty female albino rats. these rats were obtained from Animal house, Physiology Department, El-Mowssat, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University. They were divided randomly into four groups:
Control group: It included ten rats who were given distilled water.
Aspartame group: It included twenty rats who were given 265 mg aspartame /kg body weight per day.
Ginger group: It included ten rats who were given 200 mg ginger extract /kg body weight per day.
Aspartame-ginger group: It included ten rats receiving 265mg aspartame /kg body weight and 200 mg ginger extract /kg body weight per day. All tested compounds were given by orogastric tube on GD from one to 18.
