For PhD degree, for Preparing Teacher in literature - Major of Sociology Entitled “Lifestyle of Social Housing’s and Residents extent of change”Applied Research on Al Asmarat District in Mokattam
The current Research is based on a main objective: Analysis of the impact of social housing change on the lifestyle of residents living in slums. Then this objective is divided into a number of sub- objectives as follows:
1- Research lifestyle in the areas of Social Housing.
2- Monitor the obstacles and difficulties facing the success of the idea of Social Housing.
3- Analysis of the opinion of Residents of Social Housing transferred from the informal settlements in their new areas.
4- Deduce the extent to which slum dwellers have adapted to their new life in social housing areas.
5- Evaluating the role of Social Housing in eliminating the problem of slums.
The current Research falls under the framework of analytical descriptive studies, as it provides a description of the lives of slum dwellers who were transferred to the Asmarat District and how the change of place affected the lifestyle and quality of life, the standard of living, the behavioral and the social for individuals, and has there been a qualitative change or is the change only spatial? Was the place able to modify the behavior and attitudes of individuals, or was the greatest impact on the values, customs and traditions of individuals that were imprinted on the place in form and content.
Research Results, the most important as follows:
1- The change brought about by social housing in the lives of its residents is a slight and ostensible change because it relied on the shape of the buildings and the urban design of the District without taking into account the need to rehabilitate the people and raise the societal awareness of the slum dwellers that move to the District.
2- One of the most important difficulties that impede the idea of transferring slums to social housing is the material costs that the people bear in return for obtaining services (monthly rent - water expenses - electricity expenses - natural gas expenses .... etc.) In addition to the family’s daily expenses.
3- Moving the people from their homes to the Asmarat District was an attempt to improve their lifestyle in order to create new generations that would enjoy a decent life, but at the same time it led to some people feeling a lot of frustration as a result of their nostalgia for their previous home.
4- The new social housing areas, according to the state’s policy, provide job opportunities of a different nature and need qualified individuals, while the residents of slums are accustomed to private businesses that they practice within their residential areas, and thus a big problem arises for the people who do not find suitable job opportunities and are forced to go outside the District in Research of work.
5- The Research showed that transfer of many slum areas to the District and distributing the population in a way that they are not satisfied with led to the occurrence of Heterogeneity between neighbors led to the spread of quarrels between deviant groups from each region seeking to impose control.
6- The research showed that awareness and behavioral change that occurred to the people is something that needs and still needs multiple rehabilitation courses and many seminars, as this rehabilitation has brought about a positive change, but in a very simple way that is not commensurate with the amount of effort expended.
7- The results showed that the change that occurred, even if it was a little, is a cause for optimism, even though many parents are satisfied with the situation in surrender to the fait accompli and see that this life has become their life and the future of their children, so they try to adapt and accept it in the hope of a better future.
8- The research showed another result with a social and psychological dimension, which is that the combination of all residents from all slum areas along with some popular areas produced a large behavioral gap and an inability to coexist among individuals coming from non-random areas, in addition to the lack of acceptance of the residents of the Mokattam District themselves for the residents Asmarat District and the lack of human relations between them.
The Research showed that there are many positives and Negatives, including:
 The transfer of people to the Asmarat District was a qualitative shift in people’s lives in terms of the availability of multiple services such as schools, clubs and hospitals - the aesthetic form - the spread of green spaces within the framework of the state’s plan to improve the quality of life of the Egyptian citizen
 Availability of security in all areas in the Asmarat District, especially the continuous police patrols, helped reduce the spread of crimes and quarrels compared to what it was in the informal areas.
 Lack of interest in the psychological and social factor of individuals and the state’s belief that simply transferring the people to cleaner and more beautiful housing will bring them satisfaction, but this did not happen completely, which created problems in the lack of adaptation.
 Increasing the financial burdens that the family bears in the new house without looking at the income of these families and how they can spend on themselves and continue to live in the District
 The lack of job opportunities available within the District or in the neighboring Districts, which require qualifications and abilities that are not available to the residents who are moving from the slum areas.
The Highlight Results, Researcher Recommended:
1- The necessity of providing psychological and social support to the people, as they are a group within the community and a large segment of the population that should not be neglected or neglected their role, whether it is negative or positive.
2- Raise quality moral, cultural and awareness services, because minds will not change easily, but if they change, everything will change with it better, faster, and less costly, because it will stem from within the individuals themselves, express their desires, and fulfill their hopes and aspirations.
3- Monitoring and following up on the services provided within the neighborhood and listening to the complaints of the people, so that they are the tool for maintaining the quality of the services provided.
4- The link between the provided material services (supply goods, literacy, job opportunities that will be made available in the District …..etc) and with participation in cultural seminars and meetings to raise community awareness and sending children to participate in theater and artistic activities, i.e. priority in obtaining services offered by the District to those within the cultural platforms to ensure turnout, at least initially.
5- Work on investing this category (the residents of the Asmarat District) and speeding up the implementation of behavioral rehabilitation programs for them before they spread their own slum culture and transform the District into a new slum area.
6- Activating the role of NGOs and civil society institutions to assist the state in awareness programs and behavior modification for the people or through small projects that these associations can adopt and contribute to improving the economic conditions of the people in the Asmarat District while preserving the civilized appearance of the District
7- Conducting social studies before and after the transfer of slum dwellers to their new communities and seeking the assistance of specialists in this field in order to light the way for the official authorities entrusted with developing future plans.
8- Existence of a comprehensive and continuous media plan to promote national projects and create an atmosphere of public support for these projects.
9- Encouraging the cooperation of the people with the executive authorities to purify the society from the corrupt and not to remain silent about them for fear of harm.
10- Forming small groups to be the link between citizens and officials in order to detect problems early and develop appropriate solutions them.
