Abstract

When Augustus annexed Egypt in 30 BC, he began a series of reforms for the country. Egypt had deteriorated in all fields during the final years of Ptolemaic rule. These reforms paved the way for the re-flourishing of the country, although the upper hand was that of Rome.
Egypt had a special place among the other Roman provinces, since Egyptian grain was essential for Rome. The reason lies behind Egypt’s agricultural, industrial and trading position.
The financial situation of Egypt reflected both the political and economic conditions of Egypt, as well as the isolation of Egypt from the rest of the imperial provinces. Therefore, minting took a different turn from all the other provinces, resulting in its own minting system and currency, known as the Alexandrian coinage. The Alexandrian coinage has a regular series from the Roman coinage struck during the Roman Imperial times.
This study focuses on the Alexandrian coins of Commodus on all aspects. The metrology of coins used during his reign, their types and the studying of their dies.
The study is divided into: An introduction, which discusses the Alexandrian coinage, its features, as well as the economic condition throughout the Antonine Period. The first chapter is dealing with the catalogue that includes all the coins that will be put into study. The second chapter consists of two sections. They discuss the denominations and inscriptions of the Alexandrian coinage under Commodus. The third chapter discusses the types of coins. The first section is about the types of the coin on the obverse; the second is about the reverse types. The fourth chapter

discusses the dies used during the minting process. It also consists of two sections: the first one discusses the dies, and the second one discusses the distortions occurring during the minting process.
The fifth chapter is about the metrological data available for the Alexandrian coinage of Commodus, which also consists of two sections: the first being a statistical study of the coins; the second focuses on the estimation of the production of the Alexandrian coins of Commodus. After the conclusion, appendices include a list of sources, references and tables.
