Abstract

The present study carried out at the Experimental Farm (Ghazala Farm), Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University during the two summer consecutive seasons of 2018 and 2019. The effect of intercropping patterns of roselle and cluster bean at ratios of 1:2, 1:3 and 2:3 on alternative rows in comparison with sole cropped of each species and different lithovit rates (0.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 g/l) and their combination treatments on growth, yield components, some chemical constituents and competitive indices of both components were studied. The obtained results referred to that application of lithovit at 6 g/l as foliar spray caused significant increase in all parameters of roselle and cluster bean over the other rates under study. Intercropping system 1:3, in most cases, significantly increased the recorded growth parameters, yield components, anthocyanin of roselle and galactomannan percentage of cluster bean plant as well as competitive indices of the two crops in the two seasons, whereas all intercropping systems significantly decreased sepals and seed yield per faddan compared to sole crop (control). In addition, from studying competitive indices, the highest land equivalent ratio, area time equivalent ratio, land utilization efficiency, and relative crowding coefficient values were achieved by the combination treatment between intercropping system of one row of roselle alternating with two rows of cluster bean combined with lithovit at a rate of 4 g/l during the two seasons. Generally, it could be gained from planting one faddan, by using the intercropping pattern of 1:2 combined with lithovit at a rate of 4 g/l, the same yield which would require about 1.27 or 1.19 faddan of each crop cultivated alone. Also, this treatment is economic by using small area.
