Abstract

Aim: to compare the wear between the PEEK retentive caps used in locator retained overdenture versus conventional nylon retentive caps when attachment design and size is standardized. Methodology: Two completely edentulous mandibular epoxy models were used and two implants were installed in inter-foraminal area, then two mandibular overdentures were constructed on the epoxy models. The first denture was picked up with a conventional nylon cap while the second denture was picked up with a PEEK cap. A silicon duplicate was made to pour two identical epoxy casts. Both casts were scanned with intraoral scanner and a surgical guide was fabricated. Implants were inserted in both casts using the surgical guide to ensure the complete parallelism. Both dentures were subjected to cycles of removal equivalent to two years of use. Both (Nylon and PEEK caps) were scanned multiple times by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at different time scan. Each scan was performed after number cycles equivalent to 6 months of use. The resultant images were processed with computer software to measure the exact amount of dimensional change between caps at different time intervals during the study.
Results: PEEK retentive caps showed statistically significantly lower median wear value than control group. (Cap circumference p=0.000, cap thickness p=0.009 and cap depth p=0.000) Conclusions: Material of retentive element has an influence on the wear properties of retentive caps in case of locator retained overdentures
