Abstract

Summary Ankle impingement occurs when either soft or bony tissues are compressed within the ankle joint at the extreme end of a motion. Ankle impingement pain is attributed to mechanical obstruction and/or entrapment of various soft tissue structures due to inflammation, scarring or hypermobility. The diagnosis of ankle impingement is mainly clinical. However, radiological imaging is needed to support the diagnosis. Of particular, the advanced imaging (CT, MRI and ultrasound) can help further elucidate the anatomic mechanism of impingement, localize pathology to guide diagnostic and therapeutic injections and assist with pre-surgical planning. MRI is especially valuable in confirmation of the ankle impingement diagnosis and exclusion of other causes of ankle pain that may mimic or coexist with ankle impingement syndromes. MRI offers the meticulous assessment of the articular cartilage, ligamentous, bone cortex and marrow for any potential pathology. This study aimed to evaluate the role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in diagnosis of ankle impingement syndromes, assess any bony or soft tissue abnormalities. This prospective study was conducted on 40 consecutive patients with clinical diagnosis of ankle impingement and referred to Radiodiagnosis and Imaging Department at Tanta University Hospitals in the period between December 2019 and May 2021.The study was conducted after the approval of the Tanta university research ethical committee. Cases subjected to the study had no age or gender predilection.
