Abstract

A total of 138 bacterial isolates were recovered from 130 clinical samples collected from different departments of Tanta University teaching hospitals in the period from March 2016 to February 2018. Out of these isolates, 104 (75.3%) were Gram-negative and 34 (24.6%) were Gram-positive bacteria. Among recovered bacterial isolates,E.coli,K. pneumoniae, Ps. aeruginosa and S. aureus were the most common; hence twenty-five of each was randomly selected for further studies. The susceptibility of total 100 selected bacterial isolates to different antimicrobial agents were determined using the agar dilution method and the multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index values were also evaluated where all K. pneumoniae or Ps. aeruginosa isolates showed MAR index value greater than 0.2. In contrast, 22(88%) or 20 (80%) of E. coli or S. aureus isolates, respectively showed MAR index value greater than 0.2. It was also found that all K. pneumoniae or Ps. aeruginosa isolates were MDR while,22(88%) and20(80%) of E. coli and S. aureus isolates exhibited MDR profile, respectively
