Abstract

Simulation models have been regarded as the most prominent innovation taking place in nursing education over the past decade. They have been used as аpedagogical method for training nursing students. Α simulator is а potentially
powerful teaching approach that engages nursing students and requires them to
use critical thinking, practical and clinical reasoning, and provides an opportunity for reflective learning and integration of the student’s knowledge. Simulation is an educational strategy that can be used to support the process of clinical education.It can be helpful in improving students’ self-esteem through providing an opportunity to practice in а risk-free environment.
Purpose of the study: This study aimed to assess the effect of simulation-
based education on the communication skills and clinical competence among
maternity nursing students.A purposive sample of third academic year students at Faculty of Nursing,Menoufia University was used in conducting the study Interview questionnaire was developed by the researcher after reviewing the related literature; it entailed information related to socio-demographic characteristics, communication skills and clinical competence skills.Pilot study was carried out on 10 students who were excluded from the study. The purpose of the pilot study was to assess the clarity, feasibility and the time needed to complete the tool. The data were collected, computerized, revised,
categorized, tabulated, analyzed and presented in descriptive and association
form.The main findings of the study were:Socio-demographic data of the study participants There was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding their age, gender or residence
There was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding previous experience of nursing study, management of normal labor or simulation training.Communication skills among study subjects There was a highly statistically significant difference between scores of“Professional attitudes” and “Sufficiency of explanation given during nursing
care” before compared to after the intervention.Total communication scores were highly increased in study group than control group after the intervention.Clinical competence skills among study subjects There was a statistically significant difference between students regarding clinical competence skills.There was a statistically significant difference between scores of students’ability to provide direct nursing intervention during different labor stages before
compared to after intervention.
There was a statistically significant difference between students’ scores of psychosocial nursing ability before compared to after the intervention.There was a statistically significant difference between students’ scores of
health education before compared to after the intervention.Total clinical competence score were highly increased in study group than control group after the intervention Based on the findings of the current study, the following recommendations are proposed:Integrating simulator-based education with traditional clinical lab training
to enhance students’ communication skills and clinical competence.
Formulating varied scenarios for normal and abnormal labor to be intervened using simulators as a training before being in contact with real cases.
Allocating a theoretical lecture for explaining effective communication
skills to be used with laboring woman.
Specifying lab sessions for training students how to communicate effectively with laboring woman.Replication of the study with larger sample to verify or reject the effect simulation-based education on communication skills and clinical competence.
