Abstract

To face population inflation and redistribute the population away from
the narrow valley of the Nile of Egypt, the Egyptian government started
establishing new cities. New Assiut city was planned to attract the population
by constructing residential units, gardens, and a social club. On the other hand,
an industrial area was established including several factories for different
industries. New Assiut city was provided with the necessary infrastructure
such as water networks to distribute clean and safe water for different
purposes. The hydraulic performance of water pipe networks may be affected
by the amount of passing flow rates and the topography (terrain). Water
consumption depends on future population, city expansion areas and activities.
Hydraulic studies are essential to find solutions for protecting the pipe
networks from problems due to bad performance such as high or low pressure
due to rugged terrain levels and blockages due to sedimentation of suspended
loads due to low flow velocity. Also, bad performance was affected the design
of pumps and its operating parameters.
The aim of present study is to analyze and investigate the flow
characteristics in municipal water pipes and its relation to the hydraulics
performance of new Assiut city pipes network in terms of velocities, pressures,

and water age under different scenarios (strategic, actual, and operating
scenarios) starting from year 2020 till the stage of saturation with population at
the year 2050. Strategic scenarios are the planned scenarios by the new Assuit
city officials from year 2020 to year 2050 every 10 years. The recent operating
condition (year 2021) is discussed as an actual/base scenario. For the operating
scenarios, it is suggested to get the operating conditions for the pump stations
(old and future planned pump stations). Moreover, through these scenarios, the
sequential operating of the pumps located in the existing pump station (three
pumps P1, P2 and P3), as well as the pumps of the future planned pump station
(7 pumps from P4 to P10) will be discussed through the scenarios. The study is
performed using a numerical model overcoming the difficulties of using
physical models or field studies which are time and money consuming. A
numerical model of new Assiut city pipes network is built using WaterGEMS
CONNECT Edition v10.02. The model’s input data, such as pipe diameters,
lengths, flow rates, etc., are collected from the new Assuit city officials.
On the bases of the numerical model’s results, the major findings from present
study may have practical applications, especially when it is required to protect
the new Assiut city pipes network and its pumping station from the side effect
of bad hydraulic performance. The difference in ground elevations causes a
large pressure difference between junctions of the network. The full capacity
of the old pump station is required to operate at year 2024, and the future

planed pump station will consider in service by year 2025 and it will operate
with its full capacity by year 2050. low flow velocities are noticeable in
majority of the pipes in the network particularly, in the services areas. For all
the discussed scenarios, pressure heads are compatible with the limits of the
Egyptian code except some points which rise the recommendation to use of
booster pumps in these points.
