Abstract

This study is concerned with isolating and identifying of fungi and bacteria that cause microbial damage to paints, which were collected from 30 samples distributed over 15 samples from Assiut University and 15 samples from public places (mosques, homes, and colleges). Also, study of the ability of these microbes on growth and secretion of enzymes that dissolve components of paints then study the relationship between these microbes and air pollution which are in the same places as microbial damage to paints. Finally, study the effect of nanoparticles on these microbes as inhibitors or killers to protect paints from microbial damage.
The most important results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows:
1- Thirty-four species belonging to eighteen fungal genera were isolated during this investigation. These fungi were discovered as airborne fungi and on damaged paint from Assiut University Hospital in addition to various public and private places in Assiut Governorate.
2- Seventeen species of eight fungal genera were isolated from 15 samples of damaged paint that were collected from Assiut University Hospital. There are 7 types of Aspergillus, while Penicillium has 4 types. On the other hand, the remaining genera (six genera) were represented by only one species. The most common fungal species causing damage to the coating was Chaetomium, which contributed 53.33% of the samples collected.
